Overview

Lineable builds a $5 Beacon- and Bluetooth 4.0-compatible wearable bracelet for children that notifies parents when a child leaves a preset tracking area. The device is iOS-compatible and uses other Lineable app users' smartphones to form an ad hoc mesh network to help locate lost children. Features include a battery that lasts about a year and a patent-pending method to engage the battery only when the user is ready to prevent run-down in storage, plus a multiple-children mode aimed at teachers. The company says the system could expand globally as it leverages the resources of nearby smartphones, though coverage depends on product adoption. The project has crowdfunded $16,000 on Indiegogo toward a $30,000 goal, and the bracelets were slated to ship in February 2015. Founder Tyler Moon, a former Samsung developer, created the device. The article notes the bracelet is not tamper-proof (a child could cut it off), so it may require complementary solutions in higher-risk situations.
