Overview
LineVision develops dynamic line-rating technology that uses sensors, including lidar, to monitor line sag, weather and other parameters and determine real-time transmission capacity. Its system typically enables lines to carry 15% to 40% more power, and in one ideal scenario the boost exceeded 50%. The company says its solution costs about 5% of building a new transmission line and that payback periods are often measured in months; a trade-organization study cited payback of less than six months in places like Kansas and Oklahoma. LineVision has spent the last five years building the product, expanding partnerships with major utilities, growing its team and recently moving into new offices in Somerville, Massachusetts near Greentown Labs where it incubated. It is integrating its technology with GE’s Grid Solutions to offer utilities a combined monitoring solution. The company positions its product as a way to bridge the gap while new transmission is built and to accelerate renewables integration by making better use of existing wires. LineVision, Inc., based in Somerville, Mass., offers non-contact sensor solutions that monitor the condition and behavior of high-voltage transmission lines. Its V3 sensors collect real-time data on line temperature, sag, horizontal motion and anomalies to improve line throughput and ensure reliable operation. Led by CEO Hudson Gilmer, the company sells to utilities and has secured deals with National Grid, Dominion Energy, Xcel Energy, Tennessee Valley Authority and other North American customers. LineVision also works with multiple European utilities through the Farcross Project to support Dynamic Line Ratings and cross-border interconnections. The company closed a $12.5M Series B and intends to use the funds to accelerate growth. LineVision, a spinout from Genscape based in Somerville, MA, provides utilities with advanced transmission line monitoring technology. Its turnkey, non-contact systems can be rapidly deployed without outages, live line work, or specialized equipment. The technology is designed to improve transmission line capacity, resilience and safety while enabling monitoring of asset health and the risk of aging lines. CEO Hudson Gilmer said the team is solving problems from unlocking additional capacity to monitoring asset health. In January 2019 LineVision closed a $2 million Series A led by Clean Energy Ventures. The company will use the new capital to scale operations and its supply chain to support utilities worldwide.
