Lingvist

Veerenni 40a, Tallinn, 10138, Estonia

Overview

Lingvist develops a language-learning application that uses big data and AI and an award-winning algorithm to customize and adapt course content to each user. The product is designed to dramatically improve learning efficiency and speed for language learners. The company plans to hire a separate scientific research team to experiment with radical ideas and bring them into production. Lingvist intends to scale its application to many more languages and expand into additional markets. The startup is Tallinn-based and was co-founded in 2013 by Mait Müntel (a CERN alumnus) alongside Andres Koern, Ott Jalakas and Tanel Hiir. Lingvist is an alumnus of TechStars London and has previously received €1.6 million in EU Horizon 2020 funding. Lingvist offers an adaptive, mathematics-driven language-learning platform and launched a mobile app in June to accelerate user growth. The app helped propel usage to about 100,000 users. The company operates from offices in London and Tallinn and centers its product on machine-learning algorithms. Lingvist plans to use new funding to hire developers, designers, computational linguists, data scientists and other staff to substantially improve those algorithms. The startup is targeting geographic expansion into Japan and other Asian markets, and is also eyeing the MENA region. Prior financing includes €1M from Techstars (London), SmartCap and Inventure in April 2014 and €1.6M in EU Horizon 2020 funding in March 2015. Lingvist is an Estonian startup developing adaptive language-learning software that uses statistical analysis and big data to prioritize the most relevant, contemporary vocabulary. The product tracks individual users' knowledge and adapts learning order and repetition intervals to fill gaps efficiently. Founder Mait Müntel, with a background in physics and experience at CERN, built a prototype he used to learn French and reportedly passed the Estonian State Exam in 200 hours. The company offers English and French modules in a private beta and is part of TechStars London's latest cohort. Lingvist raised a €1 million funding round from SmartCap, Nordic VC Inventure, and angel investors. The team includes co-founders Ott Jalakas and Andres Koern and received early encouragement from investor Jaan Tallinn.
