Overview
Liquid Robotics designs and operates autonomous 'Wave Glider' ocean robots that collect environmental and condition-specific data and monetize it via subscription data streams. Its vehicles perform targeted measurements—such as detecting oil concentrations around rigs—and can operate in areas unsafe for humans. In December, its Wave Glider "Papa Mau" completed a record San Francisco-to-Australia voyage while continuously collecting data and navigating around the Great Barrier Reef. The company recently raised $45M in its fifth funding round. It plans to use the funding to build cost-effective solutions for defense, research, and oil & gas markets, expand its sales team, and pursue more partnerships. Liquid Robotics also intends to expand services for existing customers, including ocean observation and monitoring. Liquid Robotics builds wave-powered, satellite-controlled unmanned marine vehicles that roam the seas to gather environmental and defense-related data. Its vehicles are remote controlled by satellite and capable of long-range unmanned operations. Customers use them for environmental monitoring, defense-related sensing, and oil field exploration and monitoring. The company is based in Hawaii and California. Liquid Robotics recently raised $22 million in a Series D round led by VantagePoint Capital Partners, with Schlumberger contributing to the financing. The company also announced the appointment of Bill Vass, formerly president and chief of operations at Sun Microsystems Federal, as its new CEO.
