Lithios

196 Boston Avenue, Medford, Massachusetts, 02155, United States

Overview

Lithios builds a device that uses electrified intercalation compounds—materials used in lithium‑ion batteries—to selectively absorb lithium from briny water and then release a concentrated, purified lithium solution into fresh water. The process is designed to minimize water use: remaining brine is injected back underground and much of the release-step water can be reused. Founder Mo Alkhadra pivoted from water remediation research to recovering valuable minerals, starting with lithium to meet rising EV battery demand. Lithios has tested 16 different brines from North America, South America, and Europe as it scales the technology. The company plans to move from bench‑top experiments to a suitcase‑sized pilot, then to a refrigerator‑sized system that could be replicated modularly for large commercial projects. Recent financings will fund scale‑up and equipment purchases to support those pilots.
