LiveU develops video transmission technology that operates over cellular and Wi-Fi networks and is used by media companies to record and transmit video on the go. Its hardware lineup has included the LU70 3G/4G LTE backpack that connects to a video camera to send high-quality live streams, and its technology has been used by broadcasters such as NBC and the BBC. LiveU's units were widely used during events including the U.S. Presidential campaign, Hurricane Sandy and the London Olympics, and its technology has been implemented in more than 60 countries over 4G LTE/3G, HSPA+, WiMAX and Wi‑Fi. The company says it has seen year-on-year growth driven by rising demand for cellular-based live video transmission among traditional broadcasters and online outlets. LiveU raised $27 million in a round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, bringing its total capital raised since 2006 to $50 million, with a prior $11 million round in 2010. The company plans to use the funding to expand beyond hardware into solutions such as laptop and mobile apps and managed services, continue technological innovation and extend its geographical presence. LiveU develops portable technology for transmitting high-quality live video from the field directly to the Internet and TV using wireless networks such as 3G cellular data, Wi-Fi, and WiMAX. The company’s products enable TV broadcasters and online video sites to provide live coverage without dedicated infrastructure. Customers include large TV networks, news agencies, and online media companies. LiveU was founded in 2006 and operates an R&D center in Israel with sales, marketing and support headquarters in Paramus, New Jersey. The company has raised over $23M to date, including an $11M third round in 2010. In conjunction with the funding, a Pitango partner joined LiveU’s board of directors.
