Living Carbon
1458 San Bruno Ave Unit A1, San Francisco, CA, 94110, United States
Overview
Founded in 2019 and led by CEO Maddie Hall, Living Carbon develops afforestation and reforestation projects on degraded lands such as old mine sites and worn-out farmland. The company uses satellite imagery and historical climate data to identify suitable sites and native species, and it manages projects for decades to restore forests, improve soil and water health, and boost biodiversity. Living Carbon targets lands that would not recover on their own and aims to drive economic growth in rural communities through long-term project stewardship. Its projects have attracted corporate offtake commitments—Google, Meta, and McKinsey have agreed to buy 131,240 tonnes of carbon removal over 10 years from Appalachian reforestation projects. Living Carbon counts investors and supporters including Temasek, Toyota, Felicis Ventures, Y Combinator, and LowerCarbon Capital. The recent funding commitment from Octopus is intended to scale U.S. projects and increase the company’s carbon-removal capacity.
