Lockwood Publishing is a Nottingham, United Kingdom–based studio founded in 2009 that develops and operates Avakin Life, a social 3D virtual world for iOS and Android. Avakin Life launched in 2013 and emphasizes social interaction and self-expression through customizable avatars, homes, clothes and accessories that the company supplies. The title has more than 200 million registered users and over one million daily returning users, and monetizes through sales of virtual items and customization. The company expanded to support live operations with more than 200 developers across four offices after pivoting from console virtual-world work. Leadership says it may consider user-generated content in the future but currently focuses on generating content for the community and steady organic growth. Lockwood scaled back after the PlayStation Home shutdown and rebuilt itself via mobile, prioritizing engagement and monetization rather than heavy marketing.
