Loft Labs

415 Mission St Fl 37, San Francisco, CA, 94105, United States

Overview

Loft Labs provides a virtualization layer for Kubernetes that lets multiple virtual clusters share common underlying applications (eg. Istio, Rancher, Vault) to consolidate resources and reduce operational overhead. The product turns many clusters into a smaller set of physical clusters with virtual clusters on top, offering secure tenant isolation and management features such as automatically shutting down unused clusters. The company open-sourced vCluster in 2021 and has since recorded 40 million downloads and one million virtual clusters created, indicating strong adoption. To monetize that traction it offers vCluster Pro, a complementary product for managing high-volume Kubernetes environments aimed at larger customers. Earlier experiments included a Platform-as-a-Service that was shut down and an open-source Kiosk multi-tenancy extension; AWS included Kiosk in its multi-tenancy best practices guide. Financially, Loft Labs announced a $24 million Series A and has built a commercialization path around its open-source adoption. Loft Labs builds Loft, a commercial Kubernetes platform that ties together its open-source projects (DevSpace, vcluster, jsPolicy and kiosk) to give platform teams self-service access to Kubernetes for engineers. Loft enables organizations to scale self-service access from tens to thousands of engineers, supporting multi-cloud and multi-cluster environments and compatibility with any certified Kubernetes distribution. Enterprise features include single sign-on, audit logging, high-availability mode, and extensibility to adapt to specific platform-team requirements. One notable product innovation is "sleep mode," which detects idle developer workloads and automatically puts them to sleep, saving more than 70% of cloud infrastructure cost for pre-production workloads. The company reports strong commercial traction with customers ranging from Gusto, Urbint and HqO to Fortune 500 firms, and its open-source projects have attracted significant community adoption (DevSpace 300,000+ downloads; over 4,000 GitHub stars). Having raised seed capital, Loft plans to accelerate product development and expand its customer-success team to support rapid enterprise adoption.
