LoftSmart operates a Yelp-like review system and marketplace to help students find and lease rentals in college towns. The startup was founded by Sam Bernstein and Sundeep Kumar and graduated from the AngelPad accelerator. With $1.7 million in new funding, the company is refining a strategy to layer a leasing system on top of its listings by partnering with local property managers. Initially it is targeting student-housing developers with tools to process and approve rental applications. Founders say they aim to unify the fragmented U.S. college-rental market, which they estimate is worth several billion dollars. The service is currently live in markets across Texas and in Ann Arbor, Amherst, Berkeley, Columbia (S.C.), Charlottesville and Los Angeles.
