Overview

Looking Glass builds 8K holographic displays that produce animated 3D images using a 45-element light field and a 33.2 million–pixel panel. The company sells systems to enterprise developers and reports thousands of systems in use, with developers at large companies building apps and acting as evangelists. Looking Glass is exploring consumer applications such as video chat and has discussed gaming demos that illustrate depth and interactivity. The displays have a limited optimal viewing range (straight on to about 45 degrees) and can appear fuzzy when holograms extend far out. The four-year-old, Brooklyn-based company has raised capital to support product development and go-to-market efforts. Looking Glass produces the L3D Cube, a 3D LED volumetric display sold as assemble-it-yourself kits. The company also runs Cubetube, described as a “YouTube for cubes,” for distributing cube visualizations. Co‑founders Alex Hornstein and Shawn Frayne are leading product work from a new Brooklyn office while Frayne splits time between Brooklyn and Hong Kong. The cube can show basic visualizations and respond to voice, but currently cannot render highly detailed images or animations. Founders say software and hardware improvements to increase image detail and animation capability are planned as they study user interaction with this new display form. Earlier this year Looking Glass crowdfunded $252,000 on Kickstarter to support development and initial shipping.
