Lounge offers a platform for users to organise events and participate in communities, deliberately omitting a newsfeed to discourage mindless scrolling and encourage engagement. The founders, Jack Symonds and Wulfie Bain, describe the product as somewhere between a WhatsApp group and a subreddit. Launched in April 2022, the app says it is used on most major university campuses across the UK and Ireland and has seen pickup in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Since launch, a quarter of a million people have used the platform. The London-headquartered startup currently employs 13 people. Lounge is positioning itself to capitalise on declining Facebook usage among Gen Z.
