Lucentix is an EPFL spin-off developing a new biosensor technology that measures precise concentrations from a single drop of blood or saliva using an inexpensive handheld device. The device is designed to deliver laboratory-quality results within minutes. Its first application targets self-monitoring for phenylketonuria, a metabolic disease that requires frequent blood-level checks to manage diet and avoid severe disabilities. The company aims to finalize development of the phenylketonuria self-monitoring system and run patient tests. Lucentix says the technology could make many current lab-based tests faster and cheaper and enable broader patient self-monitoring. The team includes co-founder Rudolf Griss and is based in Switzerland at EPFL.
