Overview
Lucky Iron Fish Enterprise (LIFe) is a social impact business and certified B Corporation that sells the Lucky Iron Fish and Lucky Iron Leaf, small iron cooking tools designed to fortify meals. The fish- and leaf-shaped tools are added to boiling liquid for ten minutes and are clinically proven to improve anemia status and reduce iron deficiency with similar efficacy, better compliance and fewer side effects than traditional iron interventions. Started in Cambodia from PhD research at the University of Guelph, LIFe said it is reaching 230,000 people in 20 developing countries and reported over 40% year-over-year growth despite a challenging year for e-commerce. The company uses a portion of every sale to give back to partner communities and has been repeatedly recognized by B Corporation for community impact. LIFe plans to expand availability into new markets, diversify product offerings, grow its team and invest in research and development for new simple health innovations. The organization has set a target of reaching 2.5 million people with low iron over the next five years. Lucky Iron Fish Enterprise (LIFe) designs and distributes the Lucky Iron Fish — an iron-dosing cooking implement intended to increase dietary iron intake and combat iron deficiency. The company sells directly to consumers and partners with institutions, charities, and community programs to reach undernourished families. For the Benin project, LIFe is working with long-term partner CARE Benin to deliver nutrition workshops and promote daily use of the Lucky Iron Fish to reduce anemia prevalence. Because of COVID-19 restrictions on group training, LIFe will test digital tools and ‘‘talking books’’ to deliver information and influence behavior remotely. The project specifically aims to reduce women’s vulnerabilities created by the pandemic and to increase women’s decision-making roles in household nutrition.
