Overview

LunaDNA is a Solana Beach startup developing a way to reimburse users for sharing their health data for research. Parent company LunaPBC closed a $4.6 million round in early May, bringing total capital raised to $7.6 million to date. Investors in the recent round include ARCH Venture Partners, Bain Capital Ventures, F-Prime Capital, Illumina Ventures and Osage University Partners. The company works with partners such as Genetic Alliance and Genomelink, allowing users to share DNA data if they choose and to receive shares of LunaDNA through a Regulation A offering. LunaDNA says health data on its platform is de-identified, aggregated and encrypted, and researchers from nonprofit and for-profit organizations can request access. The company plans to use the additional funding to expand research partnerships and build out its sales and marketing teams. Luna DNA is developing a community-owned platform for genomic and medical research information. The San Diego company says the platform will let people share their genomic and health information and gain shares of ownership in exchange for their DNA and medical records. The company positions the platform as a way to pool genomic and health data for research use. To advance development, Luna DNA raised $4M in a funding round announced May 8, 2018. Investors in the round include Illumina Ventures and Arch Venture Partners, along with Bridgelink Capital, Hemisphere Ventures, and Dr. Aristides Patrinos. Dr. Aristides Patrinos, who participated in the round, previously headed the Human Genome Project. Luna DNA is a San Diego-based genomic and medical research knowledge base powered by blockchain and owned by its community. It is organized as a Public Benefit Corporation that empowers individuals to own and share their genomic and medical information via a community-owned database. Contributors receive Luna Coins, blockchain-based tokens intended to have real monetary value while preserving privacy and providing decentralized, immutable records. The platform is agnostic to DNA testing platforms, enabling aggregation of data from multiple sources. Luna DNA raised $2M in seed funding, which it is using to advance its community database and token-enabled data model. The company’s leadership and advisory team include former Illumina executives and prominent academics, positioning the database to become more valuable to medical research as it grows.
