LyteLoop is building a laser-based photonic storage system that stores data on photons and transmits it between satellites. The company says its approach provides physics-based security advantages, including up to four additional cybersecurity layers and the potential to apply quantum encryption. LyteLoop argues the always-in-motion nature of its storage offers privacy and regulatory differences versus terrestrial warehoused data. The startup highlights power efficiency and reduced ecological impact, noting it avoids the large water-cooling needs of traditional data centers. LyteLoop claims its total cost of ownership will be cheaper than conventional cloud storage and anticipates novel bundled pricing that combines storage and delivery. The company plans to launch three prototype satellites within three years, build and operate six prototypes to demonstrate on-orbit operation, and move to a production satellite and initial commercial service in roughly five years.
