M8 is building a dating platform that empowers users’ friends to act as human matchmakers who search dating apps and make personal endorsements. Friends who successfully match someone can earn gifts and the satisfaction of helping a friend find a partner. The founders are Stephen Liu (co-founder and CEO) and his wife Linda, who jointly conceived the idea after Stephen’s own friend-vouched relationship. The team argues that personal written endorsements from friends produce better matches than photo-driven swipes. The app has not launched yet and will enter private beta soon; the founders unveiled the concept at TechCrunch Disrupt’s Battlefield competition in San Francisco. The company has raised about $700,000 to date from angel investors named in the coverage.
