Overview
Better Caring operates a peer-to-peer online marketplace that enables families and people with disabilities to find, vet and hire local care workers based on skills, culture and availability. The platform enforces strict activation criteria (police and reference checks) and has attracted nearly 2,000 care-worker applications, with roughly 350 profiles currently visible and available for hire. Care workers set their own fees and run their own small businesses via the platform; Better Caring reports that typical hourly costs for families have fallen from $45–$55 charged by agencies to $25–$35 from individual workers. The service includes an SMS dispatch system to rapidly alert local care workers and is seeing daily new applications. Founders Peter Scutt and Tony Charara drew on personal care experiences and financial and investment-banking backgrounds to build the product, which launched in December 2014. The company says it is positioned to benefit from demographic shifts and government reforms (including NDIS funding growth and expanded Home Care Packages) and plans to use new funding to accelerate national rollout.
