4041 Liberty Avenue, Suite 200, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 15224, United States

Overview

Mach9 builds AI software that converts mobile lidar scans into 2D and 3D engineering models and delivers feature-level insights via its flagship product, Digital Surveyor. Digital Surveyor automatically identifies over 20 features (utility poles, traffic signals, road signs) and can report details like a utility pole's lean angle. The software reduces manual feature identification from roughly two-to-four days per map mile to under ten minutes per mile for human review and validation. Customers include engineering firms and infrastructure providers such as Michael Baker International, POWER Engineers, Langan, and Fibersmith in the U.S. and Canada. Founded in 2021 and led by co-founder and CEO Alexander Baikovitz, Mach9 originally pursued a hardware mapping approach before pivoting to software after customer feedback and participation in Y Combinator. The company recently closed a $12 million seed round and plans to grow its 14-person team while expanding the number of identifiable objects from around 20 to hundreds or thousands. Mach9 Robotics develops integrated hardware and mapping software—its signature mobile mapping devices called CUBEs—to inspect and monitor infrastructure. The CUBEs combine ground-penetrating radar, thermal cameras, LiDAR and other sensors to map surface and underground bridge features not visible to human inspectors. The company launched the Pittsburgh Bridge Initiative to map, monitor and assess roughly 450 bridges in the region over the next year. Mach9 plans to use the data and actionable insights from its platform to help stakeholders triage repairs and prioritize maintenance. Beyond bridges, the company is exploring applications in the utilities sector to address frequent outages. Founded in 2021 and based in Bloomfield, Pittsburgh, Mach9’s founding team met at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute and participated in Y Combinator.
