Overview
machineMD is a Berne-based medtech spin-off from the University Hospital of Bern (Inselspital), founded in 2019, developing a novel diagnostic device for neurological disorders. The device combines virtual reality and AI to perform complete, standardized and automated neuro-ophthalmic examinations using biomarkers such as eye and pupil movements to accelerate diagnosis of stroke, multiple sclerosis and brain tumours. The company says its system can enable eight fully automated examinations within ten minutes and deliver quantitative, objective and reproducible measurements. machineMD is collaborating with Inselspital, CSEM and Helbling to develop a prototype. The startup plans a market launch by the end of 2023. Financially, machineMD recently closed a €3.2 million seed round (oversubscribed by ~50%) and received an Innosuisse project award of about €1.27 million plus a financial contribution from the Canton of Bern to support prototype development. MachineMD develops a medical device for early detection of brain diseases such as tumors, multiple sclerosis and stroke by measuring eye and pupil movements triggered by visual stimuli. The seven-person founding team, led by CEO Dominic Senn, combines expertise in ophthalmology, neurology, R&D and business development; the company was founded in 2019 as a spinoff of the University of Bern. Prior to moving into the sitem-insel MedTech hub in Bern, MachineMD began prototype development and its lab prototypes can already perform eight different eye examinations within ten minutes. In December the startup moved into the new MedTech hub sitem-insel in Bern to continue development. The company plans to use the recently raised capital primarily for product development, including evaluation of various hardware and software concepts. Doctors are both investors and target customers for the product.
