Overview
Makani Science develops the Makani Respiration Monitor, a wireless, non-invasive chest-patch sensor that measures the presence, rate and depth of breathing in real time for sedated patients. The system uses small sensor patches on the chest so care teams can immediately detect and respond to respiratory events. An early clinical study showed the Makani system demonstrated excellent correlation with gold-standard medical spirometry for respiratory rate and volume. The device was developed to address gaps in outpatient respiratory monitoring, including missed serious oxygen-deprivation episodes, limited anesthetist oversight, greater opioid use, and patient comorbidities. Makani plans to begin human clinical studies this fall. Financially, the Irvine, California company received its first investment of $550,000 from medical device accelerator Koa Accel.
