Makara offers a Cloud Application Platform that lets developers build applications as if for a traditional data center, then places them into application capsules for cloud deployment. The platform handles deploying apps to public clouds, private clouds, or moving applications between both (for example testing on Amazon’s infrastructure and running on a private cloud behind a firewall). Makara’s platform automates scaling based on demand and provides monitoring for problems. The company is launching its platform in testing mode today for free and plans to ship Version 1 and begin charging in a few months. Makara recently changed its name from webappVM. The company, based in Redwood City, Calif., raised a $6 million first round from Sierra Ventures, Shasta Ventures, Mark Andreessen, and Ben Horowitz.
