MakersKit packages popular craft tutorials into sellable DIY kits and links customers to online video instructions. Co-founded by Jawn McQuade and Mike Stone after launching in February last year, the company sells kits across its website and retail partners. MakersKit has distribution agreements with Nordstrom and Urban Outfitters, collaborations with Birchbox and Zulily, and has published a book through Amazon. So far it has sold 45,000 kits in a little over a year at around $25 per kit and expects to more than double sales in 2014. The company plans to open a public workshop space from its Los Angeles headquarters and build a community area on its website for customers to share projects. MakersKit also draws interest from television networks such as A&E and emphasizes a mainstream approach that reaches both male and female customers.
