Overview
Mango Health operates an enterprise mobile-health platform and a consumer iPhone app that engage patients to improve medication adherence and clinical outcomes. The company partners with care providers, health plans, pharmaceutical companies and self-insured employers to reduce repeat visits and lower costs of care. Its iPhone app was promoted by Apple on the App Store beginning in May 2013. Mango Health has established partnerships with a leading U.S. integrated care delivery system, a national pharmacy benefit manager and a top U.S. health plan. Led by Co-Founder and CEO Jason Oberfest, the company intends to use new funding to accelerate engineering, content development, product marketing and account management. Mango Health launched in 2013 and previously participated in Rock Health's 2012 accelerator program. Mango Health offers an iOS app that uses gaming tactics (notifications, levels, and rewards) to improve prescription and supplement adherence, including tracking a medication journal and flagging drug–food interactions. The app awards users with discounts and gift cards—rewards range up to $100—to incentivize daily adherence. The company completed a 16-week trial of just over 100 people, where user retention outperformed the CEO’s prior mobile games by three to four times. Mango has fully launched on iOS and plans an Android release at a later date. It pursues partnerships with consumer brands (announced a Target partnership) to fund rewards and is exploring collaborations with healthcare organizations, HMOs, and employers as alternative revenue channels. The team is seven people and has positioned its product as a lower-cost nudge to reduce costly non-adherence in healthcare. Mango Health builds a health-focused iPhone app that lets users enter medications and supplements by photo or text, then detects potential interactions and issues warnings. The app also supports activity logging, scheduling, peer comparisons, and rewards such as points, discounts, and other incentives to encourage adherence. The product emphasizes inviting design and game mechanics to improve adherence among people who take prescription, over-the-counter, and nutritional supplements. Founded in February and based in San Francisco, the six-person startup released the app in private beta and has been testing since March. A public release is slated for August. Mango Health has raised $1.45 million in seed funding from First Round Capital, Mike Maples, Steve Anderson, Keith Rabois, and Mark Pincus.
