Overview

MapR Technologies provides a Converged Data Platform that combines real-time analytics with operational applications to help customers harness big data. The company introduced MapR-XD in Q2, a cloud-scale data store that manages files and containers and supports any data type from the edge to the data center and multiple cloud environments. MapR-XD offers automatic policy-driven tiering (hot, warm, cold) and enables customers to create global data fabrics ready for analytical and operational workloads. MapR will use the new funding to continue product innovation of the enterprise platform, accelerate country and regional growth across APAC and Europe, and bolster its global partner community. The company highlights a global partner ecosystem that includes Amazon, Cisco, Google, Microsoft and SAP. Global 2000 customers deploying the platform include American Express, Audi, Ericsson, HPE, Novartis, NTT Security, SAP, UnitedHealthcare and Wells Fargo. MapR builds enterprise big-data software around Apache Hadoop while also tapping and converging data using Spark and NoSQL technologies. Its business is driven primarily by licenses and support agreements, which the company says account for 90% of total bookings. MapR described its last quarter as a record, reporting a 100% year-over-year increase in bookings and multiple license transactions of $5M or more. The company lists large corporate customers including American Express, Audi, Ericsson, Mizuho Bank, Philips, Qualcomm and others. MapR opened offices in Australia in 2014 to serve Australia and New Zealand and has been engaging more with investors and LPs. Management is positioning the company for an initial public offering, which CEO John Schroeder indicated could occur in early 2017. MapR builds a Hadoop-focused big-data platform used by organizations to deploy and run Hadoop in production. The company reports significant production deployments across financial services, healthcare, media, retail, telecommunications, and Web 2.0 companies. MapR says it will use new funding to continue growth in the big data and analytics segment and to hire additional engineers. The company also plans to support open-source projects including Apache Drill, Hadoop 2.2 with YARN, and Apache Spark. According to reporting, MapR has raised a total of $174 million since 2009. Headquarters are in San Jose, with reporting also noting activity in Bangalore. MapR delivers an enterprise-grade distribution for Hadoop that unifies Hadoop, NoSQL, database and streaming applications in a single Big Data platform. The platform emphasizes full data protection, no single points of failure, improved performance and ease of use, and MapR recently unveiled MapR M7 to enhance Apache HBase capabilities. MapR participates in Apache Drill development to enable interactive analysis across large-scale datasets. Its platform is used in production across financial services, government, healthcare, manufacturing, retail and Web 2.0 companies, analyzing hundreds of billions of objects a day, reaching 90% of the Internet population monthly, and processing over a trillion dollars of retail transactions annually. The company plans worldwide expansion, including growth in Asia Pacific following recent European launches with offices in London and Munich. As of this round MapR has raised $59 million in total funding and will continue to invest in research and development. MapR Technologies provides an advanced distribution for Apache Hadoop. Its distribution offers full HA support, native NFS access, snapshots, mirroring, and a full random read/write storage layer. The company has launched GA versions of its M3 and M5 editions and reports steep customer adoption. MapR secured a strategic relationship with EMC Corporation in the past four months. The company is headquartered in San Jose, CA. It raised $20 million in Series B financing to continue accelerated growth, scale operations, expand its technology lead, and increase commercial efforts and customer adoption.
