Maps.me is an offline travel app providing routes and local business recommendations. The company plans to add a multi-currency digital wallet and to embed decentralized finance (DeFi) features into its platform. The new wallet will let its 140 million users make payments and investments, aiming to avoid high foreign-exchange rates and enable travel bookings with near-zero fees. Maps.me raised $50 million to build these features, with cryptocurrency investors backing the round. Investors hope embedding DeFi in an everyday app will help make crypto payments more mainstream. The company has a complex ownership and registration history: originally Russian, registered in Cyprus, temporarily owned by Amsterdam-based Russian company Mail.ru, and recently sold to Daegu Limited for a little over €17 million.
