Overview

matriq is a St. Gallen spinoff from the Ostschweizer Fachhochschule (OST) that develops in-mold marking and coding technologies for plastic parts. Its patented DynamicMold technology already markets date- and time-stamping of parts. In Q1 2024 the company plans to launch the DM-qode, which applies a unique, continuously changing code to parts. That code can include origin and process data, serial numbers, and downstream product information to enable full traceability of each plastic part. The technology targets industries such as medical devices, automotive, and consumer goods where part marking is increasingly important. The company has secured fresh capital in an extended late-seed financing to support product rollout and commercialization. Matriq, founded in 2019 as a spinoff from OST Ostschweizer Fachhochschule, has developed a unique watermark for plastics to provide identity, traceability and brand trust for MedTech, automotive and industrial applications. Its technology individually marks plastic parts with a camera‑readable 2D code directly in forming processes such as injection moulding. DM‑date, launched earlier this year, is the world’s first digital date‑and‑time stamp for injection moulding and uses a tiny mould insert to mark each part with the exact manufacturing time and date. The company has begun implementing its DynamicMold technology with customers in Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Italy and plans to advance the flagship product further. Matriq will use the fresh capital to develop the product and expand its sales and service organization across Europe and the USA. The article highlights a large addressable market: over 14,000 European plastics manufacturers with around 200,000 installed machines, representing roughly 35% of the EUR 280 billion global injection‑moulding market. Matriq is a St. Gallen–based startup that develops patented marking and security solutions to embed machine‑readable 2D codes into plastic parts during production. Its technology leaves an individual 2D code within milliseconds while the part is being produced; the code is visible to the eye, readable by code readers or smartphone cameras, and includes optical security structures to make copying difficult. The solution works in injection molding, blow molding, thermoforming and hot stamping and can be integrated into the production machine (in‑mold), avoiding additional external equipment. Integration with company software supports assignment of necessary parameters for traceability and automation. Target applications include medical devices, automotive and other industries, and the target market for individual traceability marking is estimated at €7 billion. Founders are André Bernard (CEO), Klaus Dietrich (CTO), Cornelia Nef and Mathias Mächler; Matriq plans to use recent funds to strengthen its sales team and equip customer implementation projects with its first digital date stamp for plastics. Matriq AG is an NTB spin-off based in St. Gallen that develops marking and security solutions for plastics using its DynamicMold technology. The technology embeds a 2D-code watermark into parts during the molding process, creating a unique device identity without delaying cycle times. Its first product, the DM-date digital date stamp for injection molding, was scheduled to launch in 4Q2020. The company was founded in October 2019 by four engineers/scientists from the University of Applied Sciences Buchs NTB and spun off with initial capital of 200 kCHF. As of the press release the team had seven members and was hosted in the Startfeld innovation center. In July 2020 it installed a new board of directors including Martin Angehrn as chairman. Matriq raised CHF 1.75M in an oversubscribed Series A in 2020.
