MatterFab builds metal 3D printers aimed at allowing manufacturers to produce direct-production metal parts that were previously difficult or costly to machine. Its platform seeks to lower part costs while increasing design flexibility for industrial customers. The printer hardware is designed to be open and to work with third-party apps and developer tools used in manufacturers’ workflows. MatterFab plans to invest the new funding in engineering and to make its printers commercially available, targeting shipments in the second half of next year. The company raised $5.75 million in a Series A led by GE Ventures with participation from the Innovate Indiana Fund, and it previously refined its prototype with support from Lemnos Labs. GE’s own adoption of 3D printing for custom parts was part of the inspiration for MatterFab’s founding, making GE a strategic backer.
