Founded in 2013, Mercado Bitcoin has expanded from a digital asset exchange into a regulated, full-stack on-chain financial platform that offers trading, tokenized investment products, credit and lending, payments infrastructure, banking infrastructure, and cross-border services. The company reports it serves 4.5 million users and has issued more than R$2 billion (about $387 million) in tokenized assets. Mercado Bitcoin holds more than 10 licenses across Brazil and Europe, including a payment institution license from Brazil's central bank, positioning it with a strong regulatory footing. The firm is pursuing expansion of payments infrastructure, scaling of tokenized investment offerings for retail and institutional investors, growth of lending capabilities, development of on-chain capital markets, and international expansion. The recent $20 million strategic investment from Tether is intended to accelerate those initiatives as Mercado Bitcoin seeks to scale its on-chain financial services across Latin America.
