Mecaware

Bully, Rhone-Alpes, France

Overview

Founded in 2021, Mecaware has developed a laboratory-validated recycling technology that captures CO₂ and combines it with amines to extract battery metals as carbonates or hydroxides, avoiding the sulphuric-acid methods commonly used today. This cleaner process targets the recovery of high-value materials—lithium, cobalt, copper and nickel—for reuse in new batteries. The company has already attracted commercial interest, signing a partnership last autumn with sodium-ion battery manufacturer Tiamat. Mecaware plans to commission its first pilot plant in Béthune by the end of 2026, with the goal of recycling more than 8,000 tonnes of metals annually by 2029. Financially, the firm just secured a €2.5 million grant and €10 million in equity from the EIC Accelerator, and it aims to bring the current round to €20 million. These funds will be channelled into scaling the technology and building the pilot facility. No current revenue or user figures were disclosed in the article.
