medCPU is an Israeli developer of clinical decision support software. The company currently works with a total of 60 hospitals. As part of a new deal with UPMC, medCPU will open an office in Pittsburgh and hire 20 engineers and other staff to work with UPMC. UPMC said the technology could enable development of other data-dependent applications in care management, population health and consumer engagement. medCPU previously participated in the New York Digital Health accelerator and raised a Series B in 2015 led by Merck Global Health Innovation Fund. The company agreed to a majority-stake acquisition by UPMC and a $35 million financing to accelerate its expansion. medCPU develops the medCPU Advisor, an enterprise clinical decision-support platform that acquires and analyzes both structured and unstructured data from clinicians’ EMR entries to deliver real-time, precise prompts at the point of care. The platform runs in the background without requiring EMR integration or complex interfaces, capturing free-text notes, dictations and structured documentation. medCPU offers a range of customizable clinical and compliance modules (eg, Obstetrics, Spine, Stroke, CHF, COPD, VTE, ICD-10 and population health) and is working with ILÚM Health Solutions (a Merck & Co. subsidiary) to develop infectious disease and antimicrobial stewardship modules. The company says its technology is already used by over 20,000 clinicians and by a number of leading healthcare providers. The recent financing will be used to grow market share and reinforce medCPU’s leadership position in the clinical decision support market. medCPU’s founding multidisciplinary team has been developing clinical decision support and intelligent error-reduction systems for nearly 20 years. MedCPU develops the MedCPU Advisor™, an enterprise clinical decision‑support platform that combines a holistic patient profile drawn from structured and unstructured EMR data with a library of customizable best-practice modules to generate real‑time, precise prompts at the point of care. The Advisor analyzes clinicians’ free-text notes, dictations, and structured documentation to reduce inefficiencies, avoid clinical errors, and lower costs. The company has deployed multiple modules across hospitals and outpatient offices over the past year, including four Tenet hospitals in Chicago. Its module library covers areas such as Obstetrics, Spine, Stroke, VTE Prophylaxis, Readmission Reduction, ICD‑10, Sepsis, Diabetes, and CHF, plus inpatient/outpatient Meaningful Use measures and ACO quality sets. MedCPU’s founding multi-disciplinary team has been working in real-time clinical decision support for over 19 years. The company plans to bring its solution to the mass market and help hospitals optimize existing EMR investments. MedCPU closed a $9.3 million Series B to support that expansion.
