Medella Health is developing a contact lens that integrates a small sensor, a chip, and a micro-antenna to transmit glucose readings to a mobile device in near-real time. The company says its sensor can last up to 30 days, which it claims simplifies calibration and reduces cost versus competitors. Medella positions its sensing technology as an edge over rivals such as Verily (working with Novartis) while acknowledging competitors are ahead on micro-electronics. The founding team includes a Thiel Fellow and CEO Harry Gandhi, and the company has been working on the technology since early 2013. Medella raised $1.4 million in seed funding to scale its technology and pursue partners for micro-fabrication, contact lens manufacturing, and healthcare distribution. The team also plans to work with regulatory bodies as it perfects the technology and advances toward commercialisation.
