Overview
MedGenome provides genomic solutions and advanced genetic testing and bioinformatics to patients, pharmaceutical companies, and research institutions, with a focus on South Asian populations. Led by CEO Mahesh Pratapneni, the company offers testing and analysis across oncology, diabetes, ophthalmology, cardiology, reproductive health, and rare diseases. It has administered more than 300,000 complex genetic tests and served over 200,000 patients, sourcing samples from nearly 4,000 hospitals and 10,000 physicians worldwide. MedGenome plans to use new capital to broaden its product offering and expand the reach of key diagnostic services, including reproductive and oncology services. The company also intends to enhance its bioinformatics and SaaS offerings to support drug discovery and clinical trials. MedGenome provides genetic diagnostics, genomic sequencing and research services, with a strong focus on Covid-19 testing and studying viral variants. The company works with research laboratories affiliated with the government of India to monitor virus evolution and identify new variants. It aims to expand diagnostic services across India and bring tests directly to affected communities. MedGenome is also building genomic data from South Asian populations to inform understanding of complex diseases and develop targeted medical solutions. Its research has produced publications identifying gene variants that influence susceptibility to Covid-19. The IFC equity investment will support expansion of testing, sequencing and research efforts to manage current and future outbreaks. MedGenome is a genomics-driven research and diagnostics company led by CEO and founder Sam Santhosh. The company focuses on expanding access to genetic diagnostics, research and data for South Asia and other emerging markets and is based in Foster City, California. It has built a large database of South Asian genetic variants through diagnostic leadership, research partnerships and as a co-founding member of GenomeAsia 100K. MedGenome has completed over 200,000 genomic tests to date and obtains samples from more than 550 hospitals and 6,000 clinicians across India. Its platform links genomics with clinical and phenotypic data to provide insights into complex diseases and support personalized healthcare research and drug discovery. The company intends to use new funding to expand access in Tier-II and Tier-III towns and cities across India and to accelerate its drug discovery programs. MedGenome provides genetic tests for cancer, metabolic, neurological, prenatal, and eye diseases, offering products such as the liquid biopsy OncoTrack, non-invasive prenatal screening (NIPT), carrier screening, and whole exome sequencing. The firm has completed over 100,000 genomic tests and supported clinicians in diagnosing more than 40% of previously unresolved cases. Founded in 2013 and based in Bengaluru, MedGenome earns about 70% of its revenue from project-based research primarily for US pharmaceutical clients, with the remainder from consumer diagnostic tests in Asia. After its first two years of operation the Sequoia-backed company said it reached break-even, growing revenue 63% to Rs 96.94 crore from Rs 59.50 crore in FY2015–16 and posting a profit of Rs 1.54 crore in the last financial year. MedGenome plans to use fresh capital to expand clinical genomic testing into Tier II and Tier III cities, democratize NIPT and newborn genetic testing, and establish more genetic centres in hospitals to support clinics. The company competes with Indian startups including Mapmygenome, Xcelris, SciGenom, Ganit Labs Bio-IT Center, and Xcode Life Sciences. MedGenome operates NGS and CLIA/CAP‑accredited sequencing labs and offers genomic research solutions and a suite of proprietary diagnostics, including liquid biopsy (OncoTrack), NIPT, carrier screening and whole exome sequencing in India. The company serves pharmaceutical and biotech customers working on cancer, immunotherapy, metabolic and neurological diseases, rare disorders, ophthalmological disease, deafness and aging. MedGenome emphasizes access to a diverse genetic‑variant database drawn from the Indian population and integrates genomics with clinical and phenotypic data to inform personalized healthcare research. Led by founder and CEO Sam Santhosh, the company participates in large initiatives such as GenomeAsia 100K to expand regional genomic datasets. Following the financing, MedGenome plans to accelerate biomarker discovery programs and further develop its OncoPept™ cancer immunotherapy biomarker solutions to support American and European genomic and biopharmaceutical researchers.
