Overview

MediaCore provides a video education platform allowing students and professors to capture, manage and share video privately across all mobile and desktop platforms. The company serves over 100 universities, including Yale, Brown, the University of North Carolina and UC Berkeley. Started more than three years ago by Stuart Bowness, Nathan Wright and Damien Tanner, MediaCore is headquartered in Victoria, Canada. It raised $4.5M in Series A financing to support its growth. The company intends to use the funds to continue advancing the product and to scale up the team. MediaCore launched about a year ago to let businesses roll out private YouTube-style video services and has since refocused on the education market. Its platform handles capturing, encoding (via its recent Pandastream acquisition), managing, storing and delivering video to students in a protected environment, and includes commenting and real-time analytics. The company says teachers can privately share video with students, other teachers, or parents, addressing widespread YouTube blocking in K-12 and some corporate settings. MediaCore has partnered with SchoolTube and reports a user base reach of 5.5 million students per month through that relationship. The startup recently hired Alan Greenberg, former Apple Head of Higher Education in Europe and Asia, as Director of Education and plans an Educator-in-Residence program. Its burn rate is low, and it intends to build more educational features throughout the year while likely raising another round around November or January.
