Overview
Medicsen develops a needle-free transdermal drug-delivery device based on sonoforesis—miniaturized ultrasound systems that increase skin permeability to transmit small drug doses. The company has refined wave-generation and drug-transmission miniaturized systems since its founding in 2015. Medicsen is advancing clinical studies for insulin delivery in diabetes and is extending its technology to other therapies including obesity (liraglutide), osteoporosis (teriparatide) and autoimmune disorders (adalimumab). The recent financing has enabled formation of a consortium with UPV, Leitat, CSIC and Centro Jesús Usón to broaden therapeutic applications. Medicsen obtained targeted funding to complete pre-clinical validation and to obtain evidence of operation in humans in 2025, with the aim of reaching commercialization thereafter. The company reports support from public and private organisations such as the Australian Ministry of Innovation, CDTI, Fundación Mapfre, IE, Bizkaia Open Future, Lilly, Merck and Sanofi, and aims to eliminate 30 million injections in its early years of sales to improve quality of life for chronic disease patients. Medicsen builds an artificial, non-invasive pancreas composed of two independently functioning technologies: predictive software and transdermal drug-delivery hardware. The software predicts patients' glucose values up to one hour ahead with a margin of error under 10 glucose units and delivers practical lifestyle advice via a chat-style app. The hardware and its physical environment administer pharmaceuticals through the skin without injections. In 2023 the company plans to integrate the software and hardware to automate treatment and deliver a non-invasive artificial pancreas. Medicsen currently sells annual software licenses for patient risk management to private insurers. The founders—Eduardo W. Jørgensen, César de Mercado, Patricia Cremades and José Carlos Montesinos—have directed development and commercialization efforts. The team raised around €800,000 in financing, which has been allocated almost entirely to research and development, with roughly 10% spent on dissemination and international relations.
