Medusa is a one-year-old Denmark-based e-commerce startup offering an open-source, API-first headless commerce platform targeted at JavaScript developers. Its core product is a modular architecture that separates storefront and backend, providing default implementations equivalent to Shopify features. The platform exposes APIs that connect to payment providers, logistics tools and customer-management systems while allowing third-party plugins or custom integrations when shops need more capability. The team worked on the software for four years with an initial customer and now reports being active in shops selling in excess of $100 million a year. In less than a year Medusa has built a community of more than 2,000 developers who have started roughly 10,000 projects. The company currently has no monetization in market but plans a paid cloud product to connect GitHub repositories to Medusa infrastructure; it is using recent funding to build products and APIs, hire engineers, and expand community and partnerships.
