Memoir

116 West Houston Street, 3rd Floor, New York, 10012, United States

Overview

Memoir is an app-first photo-sharing service that surfaces old photos and “memories,” including features to request pictures from friends and a time-capsule style feed. It launched on iOS in fall 2013 and uses features like iOS Visit Monitoring to enable a "predictive photo sharing" experience that suggests friends present at the same place and time. The company rolled out web signup and a full OS X experience and currently remains free to users while planning a premium subscription to generate revenue. Memoir reports engagement strength: users take roughly five photos per day (up 75% year-over-year) and more than 35% of all registered users are active. The founders emphasize stickiness and engagement as key drivers behind the new funding. The app’s interface and feature set are positioned as a more social and location-aware alternative to simpler services like Timehop. Memoir is an app that indexes users' photo galleries, calendar data and connected social accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Foursquare) to create and proactively surface cohesive memories. The product offers passive, context-driven alerts (e.g., reminders when visiting a place or seeing a friend) and an advanced searchable interface for queries across who, when, and where. Users can import archives via a Mac utility, request copies of friends' photos through in-app notifications, and back up photos privately to Memoir's servers. Basic backups are free at iPhone resolution; HD copies and video backups will be paid features, though pricing has not been set. The team is roughly a half-dozen people and is co-founded by CEO Lee Hoffman and Angela Kim. Financially, Memoir previously raised seed capital for an earlier concept (see deal details).
