Mermade Seafoods
Jerusalem, Israel
Overview
Mermade Seafoods is an Israeli cellular-agriculture company founded in July 2021 that is developing cultivated scallops as its first product. Its core technology, which it calls cytoponics, recycles cellular biowaste (water, ammonia and CO2) to grow algae used as growth media for scallop cells. The company has filed several related patent applications and says the recycling approach can cut reliance on costly growth media. Mermade highlights that growth media can account for 55–90% of cultivated-cell manufacturing costs and aims to reduce those expenses. The company raised $3.3M in seed funding to hire stem cell and algae researchers and advance development. It targets laboratory-scale production by 2023 and is planning toward commercial readiness roughly five years out, with the goal of significantly lowering scallop costs.
