Mermaid builds hosted services around the open-source Mermaid project, a Markdown-like language for creating diagrams and charts. The project was created by founder Knut Sveidqvist and later commercialized after Open Core Ventures connected him with CEO Andrew Firestone. Mermaid's cloud offering had about 4 million users last year. The company is adding features to broaden adoption beyond technical users, including an opt-in visual editor and a trained AI model to generate and fix diagrams via chat, with AI fixes available to paying users. Its longer-term vision is to enable process and workflow automation and pursue use cases adjacent to tools like ServiceNow rather than directly displacing Lucidchart or Miro. For now the team is focused on building out the service and reaching a broader audience so Mermaid can become a vital knowledge base for companies that adopt it.
