Mesh Optical Technologies is a Los Angeles–based startup founded by former SpaceX engineers Travis Brashears, Cameron Robinson and Serena Grown-Haeberli. The company is building next-generation optical transceivers—devices that convert optical signals into electrical signals—to improve the speed and efficiency of data-center interconnects, especially for GPU clusters used to train and run large deep-learning models. Mesh’s design eliminates a commonly used, power-hungry component, which management says could cut GPU cluster energy consumption by 3%–5%. The founders intend to reach a manufacturing rate of 1,000 units per day within a year, positioning the firm to qualify for hyperscale orders in 2027–2028. By co-locating design and automated, lights-out production in the United States, they aim to create a non-Chinese supply chain and pre-empt potential national-security bottlenecks. Long-term, the team envisions optical wavelength communications supplanting radio-frequency links across many industries, with data centers serving as the initial beachhead. The recent $50 million Series A provides the capital to scale manufacturing and accelerate product qualification.
