MetaboGen is a research company founded in 2011 in Gothenburg that researches metagenomics to identify microbial members and patterns tied to health and disease. Its proprietary research platform is based on the work of Professors Fredrik Bäckhed and Jens B. Nielsen, who remain active in the company and lead large academic research teams. The company aims to develop new treatments and probiotic products targeting metabolic and other microbially associated diseases by influencing large parts of the microbiota. MetaboGen was formed together with GU Holding to commercialize university research. The company is partnering with BioGaia to combine MetaboGen’s research with BioGaia’s product development and marketing expertise. Financially, BioGaia has committed to invest SEK 12 million over two years, which will result in BioGaia acquiring 35% of MetaboGen’s share capital.
