Meteomatics
Unterstrasse 12, St. Gallen, Sankt Gallen, 9000, Switzerland
Overview
Meteomatics aggregates weather data from more than 110 sources and its own autonomous weather drones, normalizing it into a single API product for enterprise customers. The platform refreshes forecasts hourly and delivers precision predictions down to one square kilometer. Customers can consume the unified data directly or run their own analytics and AI on top of the API. The company serves more than 600 customers, including Tesla, CVS Health, and Swiss Re. Founded in 2012 and based in St. Gallen, Switzerland, Meteomatics has largely reinvested its profits over a 12-year history to avoid frequent fundraising. The startup plans further product and tech development alongside geographic expansion into the U.S. Meteomatics runs a 1 km-resolution weather model that updates hourly to deliver hyperlocal forecasts and identify small-scale meteorological phenomena such as thunder, hail and wind. The company augments its models with data from its Meteodrones—weather drones that can fly up to 6 km (20,000 feet)—and 110 other sources to provide mid- and lower-atmosphere forecasting. Led by Founder and CEO Dr. Martin Fengler, Meteomatics serves more than 450 companies, including CVS Health, Tesla, Swiss Re, Airbus, Toyota, Volkswagen and EDF Energy. Customers use its data for energy optimization, logistics, process automation, risk management and product design. The company is headquartered in St. Gallen, Switzerland, with local U.S. operations in Pennsylvania. Meteomatics says it will use recent funding to scale its high-resolution weather and climate technology and expand into new markets and industries. Meteomatics is a Swiss-based company that provides real-time, granular and accurate weather forecast data via a proprietary in-house technology and API. The firm serves more than 400 companies worldwide and is particularly relevant to the energy industry for integrating and using renewable energies. Meteomatics also produces the world's first autonomous weather drones ('Meteodrones') that collect atmospheric data up to 6 km to improve local forecast quality. The company raised 13.5M CHF in a Series B financing round to support its growth. Klima Energy Transition Fund (Alantra) led the round in partnership with Spanish gas grid operator Enagás, and the round was completed by a leading US-based renewables and utility company. Management and investors say the proceeds will be used to further develop technology, provide higher-value services, and expand into new segments and geographies. Meteomatics develops weather forecasts for corporate clients by combining conventional meteorological data with frequent drone measurements of the near-surface atmosphere. Its drones ascend multiple times per day up to three kilometers to record wind speed, temperature and humidity. The company has developed a weather drone capable of automated takeoff and landing and operates automated drone boxes that can be centrally controlled. Customers include firms in the automotive, logistics, retail and energy sectors, notably SBB, Alpiq, Swissgrid and BKW. Founded in 2012 and led by CEO Martin Fengler, Meteomatics employs 25 people and is profitable. To accelerate growth the company completed its first financing round last autumn and plans to expand its drone network from northeastern Switzerland to the rest of the country.
