Overview
Meteor Development Group develops an open-source stack of frameworks and tools for building web and mobile applications in JavaScript. The company offers a core framework and complementary tools that developers use to build and run apps. MDG plans to sell paid products that supplement its open-source offerings, starting with a hosting and orchestration product called Galaxy. Galaxy is based on Kubernetes and is being positioned to run Meteor apps initially on Amazon Web Services, with planned support for Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform. MDG is also developing app performance analytics, testing tools, and improved integrations for UI frameworks such as Angular and React, plus Windows support. CEO Geoff Schmidt outlined the roadmap and product tiers — including free, pay-by-the-hour, and enterprise — for Galaxy during the rollout plan. Meteor produces an open-source JavaScript framework that enables developers to build rich, real-time, Google Docs–style applications in the browser and on the server. A public preview was released last April. The project relies on Node.js and aims to cut development time by providing reusable parts for client and server code. The company plans to monetize by selling enterprise support and services. To prepare for enterprise adoption it is focusing on security and authentication as well as scalability and reliability. Meteor’s founding team includes Matt DeBergalis, Nick Martin and Geoff Schmidt, with early employee David Greenspan providing additional real-time web experience.
