Metrc builds a seed-to-sale traceability system that helps regulators track cannabis inventory and product movement from cultivation to retail. Its software is used statewide in California and by regulators in Washington, D.C., and it services 11 states including Colorado, Oregon, Alaska, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada and Louisiana. The company was described as a five-year-old, Lakeland, Florida business and currently employs roughly 100 people. Metrc traces its roots to Franwell, a company Jeff Wells founded in 1993 that focused on RFID, cold-chain management and regulated markets. Management says it will remain focused on regulators while looking to expand its regulatory focus into other regulated markets and products. The firm also expects to pursue work with both domestic and international regulators as legalization spreads.
