Overview
MiaSole is a Santa Clara, California-based manufacturer of copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) thin-film photovoltaic solar panels. The company raised $55m in funding. It intends to use the capital to build its commercial infrastructure for both traditional glass-on-glass and flexible products. Led by CEO John Carrington, MiaSole aims to establish CIGS as a low-cost, high-efficiency thin-film solar technology worldwide. To date it has installed over 55MW of solar modules across projects in North America, Europe and Asia. Its product mix includes both rigid and flexible CIGS modules for a wide range of global projects. Miasole develops super-thin solar cells using CIGS (Copper Indium Gallium Selenium) and other novel materials to produce flexible, paint-like photovoltaic products. The company is based in Santa Clara and is building a production facility with 50 megawatts of capacity. Its technology aims to be more flexible than traditional silicon and to enable use in more areas, potentially at lower cost. Prior to this raise, Miasole had secured at least $58 million from investors including Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, VantagePoint Venture Partners, Firelake Strategic Technology Fund, Garage Technology Ventures and Nippon Kouatsu Electric Co. The company has now raised an additional $35 million in venture capital. CEO David Pearce would not comment on new investors in the round.
