Middle Class United Cooperative (MCU) is a start-up real estate cooperative that sells memberships to pool capital for real estate investments and nonprofit charitable activities. MCU’s first membership round is capped at 40,000 members, and each member may invest a minimum and maximum of $500 to ensure equal voting influence. The cooperative raised $3.3 million and attracted more than 6,500 members in its first two weeks, including over $2 million and roughly 5,000 members within the first 24 hours. MCU ties fundraising to community voting on investments and nonprofit activities, positioning membership as both an investment and governance mechanism. The initiative was launched by TikTok influencer Joe "OlderMillennial" Redden, a former Army veteran who uses his channel to address housing affordability and encourage financial stability for middle-class families.
