Midsummer is a Swedish manufacturer of CIGS thin-film solar cells focused on supplying specialised residential and corporate & industrial rooftop markets that cannot support traditional silicon modules. The company is developing a 50MW CIGS cell manufacturing plant in Bari, Puglia, Italy, and plans a 200MW CIGS factory in Flen, Sweden due to begin production in 2026. All production equipment for the Bari site is now in place and the company says the factory is ready to scale up production as sales increase and when factory and product certifications are completed. Midsummer reports recent financial support including a roughly €8 million investment from Invitalia, an earlier ~€6.4 million instalment from the same authority, and around US$44 million in 2021 grants and soft loans from Italian authorities. The company expects additional payments from the Puglia regional authority and a final production-related payment in 2025. Midsummer targets a market it estimates at 25GW (approximately €20–30 billion) annually for lightweight rooftop solutions and positions itself among European manufacturers pursuing specialised PV production.
