MiLaboratories has developed Platforma.bio, a no-code computational biology platform and open-source SDK that lets bioinformaticians and biologists process, visualize and aggregate NGS data and distribute specialized tools as apps. The product incorporates data visualization and generative AI to boost usability and is designed as a marketplace for third-party apps; around 300 labs used the beta and about 20 apps are available to date. The company targets bioinformaticians and aims to free them from routine data-processing work so they can focus on higher-value algorithm and research tasks. MiLaboratories says it has patented technology that enables up to 10x processing efficiency versus some workflows, addressing the scale and cost challenges of petabyte-scale sequencing data. The startup offers the software free to academics and a paid model for commercial users; it reports approaching 100 paying customers, including big pharma names such as Moderna and Bristol-Myers Squibb, and says it has revenue that reduces dependence on venture funding. Near-term plans emphasize community building: hiring engineers and developer advocates to drive adoption and encourage academic and industry developers to wrap and contribute apps to the platform. MiLaboratories develops MiXCR, a software suite that analyses genomics data to build a complete picture of immune response at the DNA level. The founding team has published on adaptive immunity since 2009 and originally built an R&D algorithm that became the basis for MiXCR. The product now incorporates AI and cloud calculation features to analyse and process massive genomic datasets and present results in a visually friendly format. The company says MiXCR can process around 1TB of genomics data on a standard MacBook Pro in one hour, versus days for other solutions. MiXCR was used in preclinical and phase 1 R&D by pharmaceutical companies during the discovery of COVID-19 vaccines, though client names are not disclosed. The startup has raised seed capital and plans to use new funds to develop a next-generation MiXCR and expand its Latvia-based office.
