Overview
MinIO develops a high-performance, Kubernetes-native, Amazon S3-compatible object storage suite for multi-cloud environments. Its software-defined system has 760M+ Docker pulls and more than 1.2M active deployments across public cloud, private cloud and edge, and is used by more than half of the Fortune 500. The product runs on GKE, EKS, AKS and private cloud platforms like Red Hat OpenShift, VMware Tanzu, HPE Ezmeral and SUSE Rancher, plus millions of colocation and edge deployments. The company intends to use the new funding to expand operations and broaden its business reach and is rapidly expanding its engineering footprint with a subsidiary in Bangalore. MinIO has dozens of customers across India, Asia and the Middle East. It is led by CEO Anand Babu Periasamy and COO and co-founder Garima Kapoor and is available on every cloud. Minio is developing a neutral, open-source object storage layer that maintains compatibility with the Amazon S3 API. The product is designed to let customers store and manage data across multiple environments, including S3, on-premises systems and other cloud providers. CEO and co-founder Anand Babu Periasamy positions the company as a vendor-agnostic solution — likening it to the "Kubernetes of object storage" — to address hybrid IT and cloud-native needs. With seed funding the company built its open-source platform and delivered proofs of concept that some companies are using. The $20 million Series A is intended to help Minio commercialize the technology and acquire paying customers. Analysts cited in the article see Minio as filling a critical data-storage gap between on-premise and cloud hosting for hybrid deployments. Minio is building an open source cloud object storage project aimed at developers and compatible with the Amazon S3 API. Its early components—Minio Server, Minio Client and Minio Libraries—are available on GitHub and the company plans to use the seed funding to continue developing those pieces. Founder Anand Babu (AB) Periasamy says Minio takes a minimalistic, developer-centric approach to simplify storage and offer feature parity with Amazon's products. The team includes veterans from Gluster, and the company hopes to democratize storage by enabling freedom to run applications anywhere, API-based access, massive scalability and easier operations for millennial developers. As an open source project, its immediate goal is to build popularity with the developer community and later monetize by offering paid services to customers who prefer not to deal with raw open source code. Financially, the company has secured a $3.3M seed round to support ongoing development.
