Mission Zero

Studio 510, The Pill Box, 115 Coventry Road, London, E2 6GG, United Kingdom

Overview

Founded in 2020, Mission Zero Technologies has developed a versatile direct air capture (DAC) technology that uses electricity and a liquid solution inspired by biological CO₂ management to capture atmospheric CO₂ in organic form. The process relies on hyper-efficient electrochemical separation to continuously regenerate the capture solution and concentrate CO₂ as a pure gas. The product is designed for rapid scaling and deployment, leveraging proven components, established supply chains, and a modular design that is cost-effective even at smaller scales. The technology is energy efficient and compatible with load-variable renewable sources, allowing flexible ramping to provide on-demand atmospheric CO₂ at the point of use. Mission Zero has moved beyond self-financed R&D pilot plants to commercially funded deployments with international customers and plans three systems on the ground by the end of 2024. The company recently closed a Series A to accelerate development of a mass-deployable DAC unit that can recover 1,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year and scale toward megatonne annual capacity by the end of the decade. Mission Zero Technologies (MZT) develops an electrochemical, heat-free, and fully electric direct air capture (DAC) process designed to deliver high‑grade CO2 with a compact footprint and reduced energy demand. The company says its approach uses mature technologies, simple chemistry and widely available chemicals to enable rapid scale-up and easier integration with existing manufacturing supply chains. MZT is developing a 120 t/y pilot plant and targets a subsequent first commercial project, with a pilot planned for launch in Thetford, UK, in partnership with O.C.O Technology. The business was spun out from Deep Science Ventures and Anglo American in 2020 and is based in London. To date it has received pre-seed capital from Anglo American and DSV, grants from Stripe, non-dilutive BEIS funding to design a pilot, and participated in a 1000 t/y carbon removal collaboration (Project Hajar) that won a $1M XPRIZE Milestone Prize. The company intends to use recent funding to accelerate scale-up R&D, expand business operations, and support delivery of its pilot and first commercial project.
